Covid vaccine makers to be liable for adverse effects of jabs

Indian vaccine manufacturers will be held responsible for any complications or adverse effects resulting from their jabs being administered. The state has not acknowledged their demand that they be compensated for mishaps.

The procurement order executed by the government with the vaccine manufacturers provides that, in the event of evidence of any health hazards or problems resulting from the vaccine, the firms will have to notify the government authorities immediately.

Company shall be liable for all adversities as per CDSCO/ Drugs and Cosmetics Act/DCGI policy/approval. Emails sent to both Serum Institute of India (SII) and Bharat Biotech did not elicit any response. The nationwide Covid-19 vaccination programme begins on Saturday.

A senior government official said the liability provision remains the same as with other systems of vaccination. It is the duty of the organisation to provide cover in the event of any untoward incident during the regular vaccination campaign.
