India imports 80% of its requirement of medical devices

  • India currently imports approximately 80% of its medical device requirements, with the United States, Germany, China, Singapore and the Netherlands being the largest exporters to the country of such products.

  • Under the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and the Medical Devices Regulations, 2017, the Central Drugs Quality Control Organisation (CDSCO) is currently controlling 28 types of notified medical devices, said Minister of State for Health Ashwini Choubey in a written reply.

  • In addition, with a view to regulating all medical devices, the Ministry of Health issued a notice dated 11 February setting out the definition of medical devices and the mechanism for regulating all non-notified medical devices in a phased manner to ensure the quality, safety and performance of such devices.
