India should begin scaling up syringe supplies for Covid vaccination


  • With the Union government concentrating on the early availability of the coronavirus vaccine, experts stressed on that India should urgently increase the supply of syringes to cope with the large number of inoculations required to contain the pandemic.

  • The experts said that the government should be well-equipped with a safe stock of syringes in advance India gets ready for the Covid-19 vaccine.

  • According to Rajiv Nath, Managing Director of Hindustan Syringes & Medical Devices Ltd, for just one shot of the vaccine, the projected demand in India will be about 900 million pieces of various types of syringes, considering that 60-70 percent of the country is vaccinated.

  • The number would amplify to 1.8 billion if the vaccine India chooses needs two shots.

  • The experts also concentrated on the role of auto-disabled syringes in the immunisation programme for the Covid-19 vaccine.

  • The emphasis has shifted from reuse consumables to single-use disposable consumables and in particular, there has been a change in higher deployment of auto-disabled syringes even for curative injections,β€œThe focus has shifted to single-use disposable consumables from reuse consumables and especially a change has been seen in higher deployment of auto-disabled syringes even for curative injections,”

  • The World Health Organization (WHO and UNICEF have also suggested that auto-disabled syringes, especially in mass immunisation programmes, be used for vaccine administration.
