I think quality or total quality management (TQM) has far-reaching implications for the management of
human resources. It emphasizes self-control, autonomy, and creativity among employees and
calls for greater active cooperation rather than just compliance.
Indeed, it is becoming a maxim of good management that human factors are the most
important dimension in quality and productivity improvement.
The type of training depends on the need of the particular company. The areas that should be
common to all organizations’ training program is problem solving and communication skills.
In addition to above areas, all members should receive training in quality awareness (TQM),
statistical process control (SPC), safety, and technical aspects of job. The only difference
among types of training is that some may be required more often and for greater length of
times than others.
Basic Steps of Effective Training Plans
ď‚· The first step in training process is to make everyone aware of what the training is all
about. Thoughts suggestions should be gathered.
ď‚· The second step is to get acceptance. The trainees must feel that training will be of
value to them.
ď‚· The third step is to adept to adapt the program. Is everyone ready to buy into it? Does
everyone feel they are a part of what is going to take place?
ď‚· The fourth step is to adept to what has been agreed upon. What changes must be made
in behaviour and attitudes.
When I as a healthcare professional hear the word “quality” being told by colleagues, I feel that we need to understand some fundamentals first. As a practice, Quality department is focused on accreditation and then documentation. When we interview any middle level or beginners for quality position and ask them about quality, they would answer everything about accreditation and no one would talk about quality (this has been my experience). So my first request to all is that we have to be clear within ourself, what Quality is and what we mean when we mention Quality.
With this small note, let me try and answer the question with my understanding of the quality in the healthcare scenario.
The initial training that is required for the employees would be to be focused on patient satisfaction. To achieve this we need to provide sufficient soft skills training and functional training(process) that leads them to provide this satisfaction. And all training should not be limited to one off programs but continuous programs which help and supports the employees that can help achieve the organizational goals.
A lot more can be written but I thought let me share some practical and operational thoughts first with the assumption that the person who raised this question have a practical option in hand before researching on the same.
